Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar is a unique area near the volcano Hekla – in southern section of Iceland’s highlands. It displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains and expansive lava fields, not far from the service center.

The Landmannalaugar area is a popular tourist destination and hiking hub in Iceland’s highlands.  It is almost invariably the starting point of the famous Laugavegur trekking trail, but also an ideal base for a variety of rewarding daylong or shorter hikes. A dip in the local natural geothermal pool and a hot shower afterwards at the shower facilities is the perfect relaxation at the end of the day.

Tourists visit the area from June through late September, after which time the road to Landmannalaugar is closed. A mountain lodge, in operation since 1951, can accommodate 78 people and has basic amenities.

We have daily departures to Landmannalaugar from Reykjavík, Hveragerði, Selfoss, Hella, Leirubakki and Rjúpnavellir. For detailed information on departures please see our timetable.

The Hikers’ bus pass is ideal for those who intend to hike in the Laugavegur trail, the Fimmvörðuháls trail – or both!

The pass guaranties a single transfer from Reykjavík to your starting point at Þórsmörk, Landmannalaugar or Skógar – and back to Reykjavík from the end-point of your hike. You can take all the time you need for the hike, provided it falls within the passport’s time frame 21/6 – 8/9 2019.

Book your Hikers bus pass here.

There are three marked hiking trails in the area covered by the Hikers pass. You can also combine them into one extended hike.

1. Hellismannaleið
is a three day hike from Rjúpnavellir to Landmannalaugar. The walk takes you trough lava fields, moon-like black sands, up hills and down, and to green valleys.  This is a challenging hike with an elevation increase of 1000 meters.

Day one: From Rjúpnavellir to Áfangagil, 17 km – walking time about 7 hours.
Day two: From Áfangagil to Landmannahellir, 22 km – walking time about 8 hours.
Day three: From Landmannahellir to Landmannalaugar, 17 km – walking time about 6 hours.

You can take the Highland bus at 07:30 or 12:30 from Reykjavík to Rjúpnavellir, arriving at 10:15 or 15:15.

2. The Laugavegur trail is one of the most popular and most traveled hiking trails in the Icelandic highlands. The 55 km long trail between Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk is famous for spectacular scenery with colorful mountains and glaciers. Most people start their hike on the more gentle slopes from Landmannalaugar – but the more challenging way is to start the hike in Þórsmörk, ascending by a steeper approach and ending the hike with a rewarding warm bath in the Geothermal pool in Landmannalaugar.

Day one:
From Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker, 12 km – walking time about 4-5 hours.
Day two: From Hrafntinnusker to Álftavatn, 12 km – walking time about 4-5 hours.
Day three: From Álftavatn to Emstrur, 16 km – walking time about 6-7 hours.
Day four: From Emstrur to Þórsmörk, 15 km – walking time about 6-7 hours.

You can take the Highland bus at 07:30 or 12:30 from Reykjavík to Landmannalaugar, arriving at 11:45 or 16:45 – or join our all inclusive guided Laugavegur trek (info and booking here).
